Money can be one of the most stressful parts of a relationship
We might get into relationships for love, but love alone rarely keeps them going. The world demands attention to practical matters: chores, bills, careers, housing, travel, possibly children. These unromantic realities test a relationship far more than initial attraction ever could.
Money is obviously crucial among all these challenges. Without it, you simply can’t get by. At least, when you’re single, managing your finances is your problem alone. But the moment you become a couple, it transforms into a shared responsibility. Suddenly you’re making joint decisions about expenses and figuring out finances together.
That is why money problems can feel so overwhelming for couples, and research backs that up. According to a SunTrust Bank survey, 35% of people who experience relationship stress say finances are the most common cause.
Another survey, conducted by the mutual pensions and investments provider Royal London, found that money was the number one issue couples reported arguing about, with one-third saying they were incompatible in how they handled finances. Similar research reveals that money disagreements rank among the top reasons people cite for divorce.
Perhaps most troubling is that a third of couples have experienced financial infidelity in their relationship. Among them, 31.4% had partners keeping purchases secret, while 10.4% had their savings drained without their knowledge. Sound familiar?

April Eldemire, LMFT, a psychotherapist who specializes in marriage and couples issues, says there is a reason money causes so much tension between partners.
In a piece for Psychology Today, she explains that couples often have conversations about major life topics early on, such as religion or children. But many skip a serious discussion about money. “These differing views can be a recipe for conflict, and they can stem from as far back as your childhood,” she says.
That makes sense. Our values, beliefs, and attitudes about money often start forming long before we ever enter a relationship. By adulthood, those ideas can be deeply rooted, and they do not always match a partner’s.
For example, someone raised in a household where saving was a priority may struggle to understand a partner who spends freely. And someone who grew up without much financial stability may feel very differently about money from someone who always felt secure.
That is why Eldemire recommends talking about money openly and early. “Be sure to discuss household finances, be open about your spending habits, and avoid the tendency to keep quiet about financial challenges that could affect you both,” she advises.
That means being honest, even when the conversation feels uncomfortable. Debt, spending habits, savings goals, and financial worries all need to be out in the open.
It also helps to treat finances as something both people handle together. Couples need to find a system that works for them, whether they are talking about everyday spending or long-term plans. When only one person is carrying that responsibility, the other can end up feeling confused or excluded.
As this story shows, being left in the dark can do real damage. It can build resentment and leave someone wondering whether the relationship still has a future at all. And that’s definitely not a recipe for a healthy, lasting partnership.
